The Overview of China’ Pesticide Industry in 2020

In 2020, the COVID-19 epidemic suddenly broke out. Facing the impact of coronavirus epidemic and the recession of the global economy, China adopted a series of supportive policies for economic recovery, helped pesticide industry overcome the difficulties, accelerated the resumption of work and production, ensured use of pesticides in crop production for the whole year and expanded exports of pesticides. On the whole, the output of pesticide in China decreased first and then increased in 2020, basically meeting the domestic demand for agricultural use, and providing an important support for agricultural production and food security. In 2020, the main business revenue of enterprises above the whole industry scale was RMB228.058 billion (USD35.1 billion), up 6.1% compared with the same period of last year, and the total profit was RMB19.062 billion (USD2.9 billion), up 0.5% YOY. A total of 2.148 million tons of pesticides were produced, a decrease of 1.1% YoY. In 2020, the export volume of pesticides was 2.514 million tons, and the export value was USD7.624 billion, an increase of 71.2% and 56.9% respectively, achieving a substantial increase in total import and export volume and trade surplus. Looking forward to 2021, in the first year of “14th Five-year Plan”, China’s pesticide industry will continue to move forward the steps from high-speed growth to high-quality development. The output will be maintained or lower than the level of 2020. The domestic consumption of pesticides remains decline, and the import and export trade of pesticides will grow steadily.
